The Gold American Buffalo was first minted in 2006 is America’s first 24-karat, pure gold, one-ounce bullion coin. Based on James Earle Fraser’s 1913 buffalo nickel design, this gold bullion coin boasts the classic profile of a majestic Native American on the obverse and the revered American bison on the reverse. The Native American depicted on the Gold American Buffalo is said to be based on the likenesses of Chief Iron Tail of the Lakota Sioux, Chief Two Moons of the Cheyenne, and a third, unidentified Chief.
