South African Gold Krugerrands (2011 & Prior)
South African Gold Krugerrands (2011 & Prior)
The South African Gold Krugerrand is the world’s first modern gold bullion coin struck in 1970. Designed by Coert Steynberg, the coin features the four-term president of the South African Republic, Paul Kruger, on the obverse, and a springbok on the reverse. Since its inception, more than 54 million Gold South African Gold Krugerrands have been circulated worldwide. Unlike the Gold American Eagle, Gold Canadian Maple Leafs, or Gold Vienna Philharmonic bullion coins, the Krugerrand is denominated in ounces of pure gold rather than bearing a face value. Gold South African Krugerrands are available in four sizes: 1 oz, ½ oz, ¼ oz, and 1/10 oz. The coins were originally intended for circulation, and therefore are crafted from durable, 22-karat gold.
