 90% - 40% - 35% Silver US Coins

90% - 40% - 35% Silver US Coins

90% - 40% - 35% Silver US Coins

Why are pre-1965 nickels, dimes, and quarters  so popular among both collectors and stackers? Probably because prior to 1965, there existed so-called  90% - 40% - 35% Silver U.S Coins. Yes—prior to 1964, most U.S. quarters, dimes, and half-dollars contained 90% silver. Even the lowly nickel contained some silver: So-called “war nickels,” minted between 1942 and 1945 contained 35% of the precious metal. That all changed in 1965, when an Act of Congress ordered the US Mint to reduce the silver content of Kennedy half-dollars to 40%, and to completely replace the silver in quarters and dimes with a nickel-copper alloy.

As you might well imagine, when 1965 rolled around a goodly number of Americans had begun hoarding 90% - 40% - 35% Silver U.S Coins, on the assumption that that someday silver would be worth far more than nickel or copper. And, after 1969—when minting of 40% silver 1965-1969 Kennedy Halves ceased as well—this hoarding reached epidemic proportions, and even Americans who had not been paying that much attention began sifting through their pocket change for pre-1965 dimes, quarters, and halves, and nickels minted between mid-1942 and 1945, and selling them to coin dealers for prices over their face values.

Today, many investors in silver bullion prefer pre-1965 dimes, and quarters, war nickels,  pre-1969 half-dollar bags of silver coins, (sometimes referred to as junk  silver)  because 1) they are highly liquid, 2) their small size makes them easy to carry and store, and  3) because they are legal tender. Today, they are a regular part of the bullion-investment landscape.

At Goldmart.com, we sell these coins in canvas bags of silver coins with face-values totaling $50, $100, $250, $500, and $1,000 of either dimes or quarters or a combination of both, and ranging in condition from Good - Extra Fine. The same with Kennedy half-dollars—the 90% Silver Versions dated 1964 and the 1965-1969s containing 40%.

And, let's not forget 35% Silver War Nickels—they come in bags of silver coins with face values of $50, $100, and $200. All are ever-ready for shipment to customers in the United States and Canada.

Please see the individual listings for specific details regarding 90% Silver Mercury Dimes, Walking Liberty Halves, Franklin Halves, 90% and 40% Kennedy Halves, and US “War Nickels.”
