Proof American Gold Eagle Coins

Buy American Proof Gold Eagle Coins Online from Goldmart

The American Proof Gold Eagle Coin, which was first minted by the United States Mint in 1986 and is recognized as the collector’s version of the Gold Eagle Coin. A proof is the first in a set of newly minted coins and therefore has a special and exclusive value to collectors. The Proof Gold Eagle Coin, in other words, is the first mint in a series often referred to as “America’s most beautiful coin.” The four sizes of 1/10 oz, 1/4 oz, 1/2 oz, and 1 oz denote the amount of gold in troy ounces per coin, with the rest constituting an alloy of silver and copper for added sturdiness.

American Proof Gold Eagle Design

The American Proof Gold Eagle Coin’s striking design is a product of state-of-the-art die-casting workmanship and enduring good taste. This obverse of the proof draws inspiration from American sculptor Augustus Saint-Gaudens’ Gold Double Eagle Design for the $20 coin, made by the US Mint in 1907.  The reverse was designed by Miley Busiek. Either side of the proof will show off the luminous, mirror-like finish that is the touchstone of this bullion variety.

The front of the coin features the bold image of Lady Liberty, the icon of timeless American values. This iteration sees her with her long locks flowing triumphantly in the wind, with the sun’s rays immediately behind her. In one hand she carries a torch, which is a symbol of enlightenment; in the other, she carries an olive branch, symbolizing peace.

The olive branch also features on the obverse of this coin—it is held in the talons of the bald eagle, America’s emblematic bird. The male returns from flight to his nest, where his mate and her hatchlings await him. An image like this still resonates to this day with the modern American family.

History of American Proof Gold Eagle Coins

American Gold Eagle Coins were once minted using a 22-karat alloy known as “crown gold,” but the said alloy was not widely used for gold coins past the early 19th century. But what is unique about Gold Eagle Coins is that the US Mint had raised the standard from 90% gold to 91.67% gold specifically for this variety, thus distinguishing it from all other gold bullion.

The American Eagle Coin Program was authorized by the United States Congress in 1986, allowing investors to add physical gold, silver, and other precious metals to diversify their investment portfolios. Shortly after this time, the American Gold Eagle soared to become the US Mint’s bestselling gold coin, going head to head with bullion investor favorites like the Canadian Maple Leaf and the South African Krugerrand.

American Proof Gold Eagle Coins at Present

As of this time, the coin remains highly sought after among both collectors and investors. With its limited mintage, the American Proof Gold Eagle coin is typically bought in individual pieces or in 4-coin sets. A factor that influences the coins’ rarity in the market is the year they were produced, with some years averaging a lower number mintage than others. Proof mintagess are released almost exclusively for collection purposes, and thus their pricing has more to do with the circulation of bullion coins as opposed to fluctuations in the gold market.

An ideal acquisition for serious numismatists, this coin would also be an exceptional gift item for special occasions, such as graduation from school, promotion at work, and the like. Contact a reputable seller like Goldmart to get your hands on this one-of-a-kind item.
