 Canadian Gold Maple Leaf Coins

Canadian Gold Maple Leaf Coins

Buy Canadian Gold Maple Leaf Coins Online

The Canadian Gold Maple Leaf Coin suite is the official gold bullion coin of Canada.  It is treasured by investors and collectors and only second in popularity to the American Gold Eagle.  It is the second gold bullion coin issued in modern times after the South African Gold Krugerrand.  The Royal Canadian Mint (RCM), however, is a leader when it comes to innovation as the Canadian Gold Maple Leaf would be the first to feature heightened purities of gold and incorporate security devices into the design.  Also, throughout the years, the Maple Leaf has been released with celebratory and commemorative designs such as special privy marks and even holograms.  These reasons are why there is truly a Canadian Gold Maple Leaf for each type of investor and collector.  Which type is for you?

The Canadian Gold Maple Leaf Coin Design

The beloved design of the business strike Canadian Gold Maple Leaf has remained nearly unchanged throughout its mintage with newly issued coins being almost unrecognizable to those first issued over 40 years ago; the only subtle changes have been updated portraits of Queen Elizabeth II and the addition of security features.

The obverse of the Maple Leaf, like all circulated base metal specie and uncirculated precious metal coinage of Commonwealth Realms, feature the reigning monarch, Queen Elizabeth II.  Three different effigies created by different sculptors show Her Majesty at different times in her life: Arnold Machin’s youthful depiction of the queen at 39 years of age is on coins issued from 1979 to 1989; Dora de Pedery-Hunt showcases a matured queen of 64 years of age on coins issued between 1990 and 2003; and from 2004 to present, Susanna Blunt’s effigy of a wise queen of 77 years of age graces the coins.

Only three inscriptions are minted onto the obverse and include ELIZABETH II, the face value, and the year of mintage.

On issuances before 1990, Her Majesty’s title D.G. Regina or Dei Gratia Regina, meaning “By the Grace of God, Queen”, is engraved on the edge of the coin.

Walter Otts’ stunningly detailed sugar maple leaf on the reverse gives rise to the coin’s name, the Canadian Gold Maple Leaf.  However, like that depicted on the Canadian flag, this national emblem is a generic rendition representing the ten different species of maple trees that thrive throughout Canada’s ten provincial states.  The maple leaf is the perfect design choice for the coin since it continues to be an important symbol to Canadians since 1834 when the St. Jean Baptiste Society first adopted it as its sign.

The words CANADA, .9999 FINE GOLD in English, .9999 OR PUR in French, and 1 OZ are minted onto the back of the coin.

Available Weights of Canadian Gold Maple Leafs

Nowadays, there are five different weight choices to select from when buying Canadian Gold Maple Leafs but that was not always the case.  Over the years, the Royal Canadian Mint added new weights to its Gold Maple Suite.  The following table shows the different weights and face values and the year they were first issued.

The Beginnings of the Canadian Gold Maple Leaf

Before the Canadian Gold Maple Leaf was first minted in 1979, the only modern gold bullion coin available to the world was the Krugerrand of South Africa.  In the late 1970s, Western countries boycotted South African imports including the Krugerrand in protest of its apartheid government.  Canada capitalized on this newly created deficiency in the supply of gold bullion by issuing its .999 fine, 1 oz Gold Maple Leaf in 1979 to meet global demand.  In 1982, the Royal Canadian Mint heightened the gold purity standard to .9999 fine and even releases special edition coins minted with .99999 fine gold.

Your Investment Deserves Security (Features)

With both gold prices rising and counterfeit bullion becoming more prevalent, the Royal Canadian Mint wanted to provide investors with security features that could be used to quickly identify the genuineness of its products.

In 2013, a laser micro-engraved privy mark of a maple leaf was added to the coin.  When viewed under magnification, the last two digits of the year of mintage became visible within this small leaf.  In fact, RCM’s Bullion DNA Anti-Counterfeiting Technology registers these privy marks throughout production into a secure database.  Investors can then take and submit scans of the privy marks on their coins which are then compared against the database to validate authenticity.

Light-refracting radial lines were added to the fields of both the obverse and reverse in 2015.  Not only do they deter unauthorized duplication of the coin but they also add to its aesthetics.
