South African Gold Krugerrand Design

The South African Gold Krugerrand is known the world over for its simple but elegant designs. On the obverse side is the portraiture of Stephanus Johannes Paulus “Paul” Kruger, the former president of the South African Republic and the coin’s namesake. The best-known design is by Otto Schultz, done in 1984. The portrait is rounded off with the engraved letters of “Sud-Afrika” and “South Africa.”

On the reverse side is the image of the springbok, an antelope indigenous to the southern and southwestern regions of Africa, prancing on grass. The reverse also displays the individual South African Gold Krugerrand’s year of mintage and proof of its gold weight.

History of South African Gold Krugerrand Coins

South African Gold Krugerrand Coins were first struck in 1967 to increase the appeal of South African gold. This bullion item proved a success early on, and by 1980 it had already dominated the global gold coin market at 90%. “Krugerrand” is a portmanteau of Paul Kruger’s name and the rand, the official currency of South Africa.

But this isn’t to say that all markets received the coin evenly. During a period between the 1970s and the 1980s, the United States and some other Western countries banned the importation of the Krugerrand because of its association to the South African apartheid government. The coins pursued, however, and soon reached their 50th anniversary of issuance in 2017.

South African Gold Krugerrand Coins at Present

More than half a century after their first mintage, the South African Gold Krugerrand Coins remain in the public eye. In 2010, the South African Mint released more than 500,000 bullion coins. The South African Gold Krugerrands are also the subject of their own lore. Some private mints have released their own “rounds” imitating the Krugerrand’s Paul Kruger and springbok designs. It has also become an informal tradition among some anonymous North American benefactors to drop Krugerrands into Salvation Army kettles.
