The Design of the Austrian Silver Philharmonic Coin

Both the Silver and Gold Austrian Philharmonics carry the same design made by Thomas Pesendorfer. The design, which remains unchanged to this day, is a tribute to the Vienna Philharmonics Orchestra. The obverse of the coin features the Great Pipe Organ from the home of the Vienna Philharmonics Orchestra, the Musikverein Concert Hall. It also bears the face value of the coin, which is 1.50 EURO, the year of issue, and the phrases REPUBLIK OSTERREICH and 1 UNZE FEINSILBER.

The reverse of the coin features an array of musical instruments including a harp, cello, bassoon, Vienna horn, flute, and violin. This side also features the phrases WIENER PHILHARMONIKER and SILBER.

The Origin of the Austrian Mint

The Austrian Silver Philharmonic Coin is minted by one of the oldest mints in the world, the Austrian Mint. Returning from the Crusades, Richard the Lionheart was captured and imprisoned near Vienna after he previously insulted Duke Leopold V. To secure his freedom, the English monarch paid tons of silver to Duke Leopold V, who used the precious metal to establish the Austrian Mint in 1194.

A Brief History of the Austrian Silver Philharmonic Coins

The first Austrian Philharmonics Coins debuted in 1989 and were only available as gold bullion. The value of the coins were initially tied to the value of the Austrian Shilling, which was Austria’s official currency then, but this changed following the country’s membership to the EU. The Austrian Silver Philharmonics was first issued in February 2008. Only 7,773,000 units were struck in the first year of minting—the lowest amount for any year in the series— but the coin proved to be a popular one. It peaked in 2011, when a total of 17,873,700 units were issued due to the growing demand for the coin.
