Design Features of the British Silver Britannia Coin

The classic Britannia made by the esteemed sculptor Philip Nathan in 1987 is used on the reverse of silver and gold Britannia coins.  The coin takes its name after Britannia and carries the image of the female personification of Britain. Britannia, an evolving goddess-like icon bestowed upon the province, first appeared on Roman coinage of the empire almost 2,000 years ago with the Hadrian denarius in AD 117.  It would be struck from coinage before reappearing in 1672 for the coinage of Charles II. Britannia is typically portrayed with a trident that proclaims Britain’s maritime might, a Corinthian helmet that represents strength and courage, and an owl and olive branch that stand for wisdom and peace, respectively.  The portrayal of Britannia would typically change annually and show her seated or standing in alternate years.  However, Phillip Nathan’s standing portrayal was so popular that it was used several alternating years before becoming the official reverse in 2012 of the series.

The obverse of the British Silver Britannia, like all base metal and precious metal coins of the Commonwealth of Great Britain, portray Queen Elizabeth II.  Three different portraits of the queen have been featured on the series including the third definitive coin portrait by Raphael Maklouf that was featured on the initial release of the series in 1997, the fourth definitive coin portrait by Ian Rank Broadley FRBS in 1998, and the fifth definitive coin portrait by Jody Clark in 2016.  Also, in 2018, a guilloché design was incorporated into the field to enhance the beauty while deterring counterfeiting.

Different Silver Purities

Britannia coins refer to both the gold and silver British bullion coins issued by the Royal Mint. The gold coins were first minted in 1987 and contain .9999 fine gold, while the silver coins were issued 10 years later in 1997. British Silver Britannia Coins minted from 1997 to 2012 weighed 32.45 g, measured 40.00 mm in diameter, and were composed of 95.8% silver, a purity referred to as Britannia silver that replaced .925 sterling silver around three centuries ago. Those issued starting in 2013 weighed 31.21 g, measured 38.61 mm in diameter, and were composed of 99.9% silver.
