Chinese Silver Panda Coins

Buy 1 oz and 30 g Chinese Silver Panda Coins Online

The Chinese Silver Panda Coin is a series of silver bullion coins issued by the People’s Republic of China. Just like its gold counterpart, the Chinese Gold Panda, the design of this silver coin changes every year. Although the weight of the bullion changed from 1 ounce to 30 grams, limited mintages for collectors have and are minted in other various sizes ranging from 1/4 troy ounce to 1 kilogram.

The purity of this Chinese Silver Panda series has changed over time. Between 1983 and 1985, they were composed of 90% silver.  92.5% sterling silver was used for the 1987 issuance. Since 1989, however, China Gold Coin Incorporation (CGCI) has consistently used 99.9% investment-grade silver for minting Chinese Silver Panda.

Due to the purity of the coin, as well as its ever-changing design, the Chinese Silver Panda is highly sought after by coin collectors and investors alike.

Obverse and Reverse Designs of the Chinese Silver Panda Series

The Chinese Silver Panda and the Chinese Gold Panda share the same design. The obverse of the coin features a depiction of the Temple of Heaven, a complex of religious buildings found in Beijing. On top of the image are the Chinese characters that translate to the People’s Republic of China, and below it is the year of minting. The commemorative version of the coin also bears a short inscription of the event it is supposed to be marking.

The reverse features different depictions of giant pandas every year, except in 2000 and 2001 when the same design was used in both issues. The treasured giant panda is the national animal of China and is adored around the world.

Weights of the Chinese Silver Panda Coins

The Chinese Silver Panda was first issued in 1983. This coinage has been minted every year except in 1986. It is legal tender in China. The biggest size available, the 1 kg coin, has a face value of 300 yuan and the smallest size, the 1/4 oz coin, has a face value of only 3 yuan.  Other weights and face values include the 12 oz coin worth 100 yuan, the 5 oz coin worth 50 yuan, the 1 oz and 30 g coins both with a face value of 10 yuan, and the 1/2 oz coin with a denomination of 5 yuan.

The weight system used for Chinese Panda Coins were changed from Imperial units of troy ounces to metric units of grams in 2016. This move slightly affected the weight and dimensions of both the silver and gold coins.
