Who Mints Silver Rounds?

Private mints are legally prohibited from coining money as set forth by Article I, Section 8, Clause 5 of the United States Constitution that gives Congress control “to coin Money, regulate the Value thereof […]”.  Congress therefore authorizes the United States Mint to print currency and mint circulating base metal coinage and monetized precious metal coinage such as the $1 American Silver Eagle Coin suite.  As a result, private refineries offer an alternative in the form of coin-like silver rounds.

Over the years, there have been and are numerous private mints that fabricate 1 oz Silver Rounds including popular Johnson Matthey and Engelhard, both of which no longer operate but are highly collectible.  Today, Goldmart sells secondary market silver rounds minted by these companies and also new silver rounds minted by SilverTowne and Sunshine Minting, Inc., two well-respected leaders within the precious metals industry.

Silver Rounds vs. Silver Coins

1 oz Silver Rounds are very similar to silver coins in that both contain 1 troy ounce of silver that is .999 fine silver at minimum and that their value is mostly derived from this silver content.  The main difference is that coins are monetized bullion struck by sovereign mints and guaranteed by governments while silver rounds bear no face value and are fabricated by private mints for investment purposes.  Silver rounds also carry a lower premium because they are privately minted making them more affordable and better suited to investment strategies to buy silver close to spot price.

Historic American Coin Designs

1 oz Silver Rounds feature a variety of different designs ranging from holiday themes to hobo nickel recreations to fantasy series.  Some are even enameled with color or finished with an antique lustor.  However, the most popular 1 oz Silver Round designs recreate the beautiful artwork of collectible and historic United States coin masterpieces including:

  • Buffalo Nickel – Designed by America sculptor James Earl Fraser in 1911, this famous depiction of an Indian brave on the obverse and an American bison on the reverse circulated from 1913 to 1938.  The United States Mint has further memorialized this beautiful coin in its 24 karat American Gold Buffalo Coin suite.
  • Walking Liberty Half Dollar – German-born American sculptor Adolph A. Weinman designed this famous 50-Cent piece that circulated from 1916 to 1947.  The coin is so treasured that the United States Mint used the obverse design of a walking Lady Liberty on its $1 American Silver Eagle Coin suite.
  • Morgan Silver Dollar – Designed by United States Mint engraver George T. Morgan, this silver dollar has become one of the most iconic and collectible silver coins ever minted.  It circulated from 1878 to 1904 and again was issued in 1921.  Some coins are struck with ‘CC’ mint-mark to show they were minted at the famous Carson City Mint using silver mined from the Comstock.  The obverse shows an effigy of Lady Liberty and the reverse depicts a heraldic bald eagle.
  • Indian Head Gold Eagle – This $10 gold coin was continuously minted from 1907 to 1916 and irregularly thereafter until 1933.  It was designed by famed American sculptor Augustus Saint-Gaudens.  The countenance of the Indian wearing a feathered headdress on the obverse was based loosely on his design of the Roman goddess, Victory.  The reverse of a standing eagle was the original design he had planned for the gold double eagle.
  • Augustus Saint-Gaudens’ Gold Double Eagle – Augustus Saint-Gaudens, one of America’s greatest sculptors, designed of the twenty-dollar gold eagle that was minted from 1907 to 1933.  The stoic figure of Lady Liberty graces the obverse and has been adopted by the United States Mint for its American Gold Eagle Coin suite.

Stackable Silver Rounds

Stackable 1 oz Silver Rounds are minted by SilverTowne, a USA-based leading refiner and fabricator of silver bullion.  These rounds mimic the same design element of pokers chips that allow them to be securely stacked—the obverse and reverse surfaces have a milled or reeded border that interlock with adjacent rounds.  These are available in different designs including the Buffalo Nickel, the Morgan Dollar, and the Liberty Bell and there is even a Stackable 5 oz Silver Round.
